Eddie's Story - Part 1

11 August, 2008

Monday morning he was a happy little puppy and gobbled up his breakfast. By lunchtime, things started to change. Eddie vomitted for the first time... then 10 minutes later, vomitted again. All the food he would have eaten in the last 12 hours was coming back up. I rang the local vet (Vital Vet, Ellenbrook) and they made time for him that afternoon to be looked at. Eddie continued to vomit that afternoon, and started to have profuse dihaorrea.

The vet was unsure what was exactly wrong with Eddie, but commented that he was slightly dehydrated and fairly underweight for his age - he was supposedly 6 weeks old. Eddie weighed 2.4kg on 11 August. His recommended weight at that age is around 5kg. The vet prescribed some antibiotics and special sensitive puppy food. His initial thought was that he has some enteritis/gastro bug and that the antibiotics would kill off anything too serious. This initial step of taking the antibiotics my just have helped save Eddie's life.

The evening went along fairly expectedly. Eddie was hardly eating, and was still vomitting. He was very good at taking his medicine though, such a good little pup. That night he slept in his basket next to me in our bedroom. He was sick a few times during the night, but still was drinking - which was a good thing.

The next morning, Tuesday, I had to go to work. Eddie was very quiet, and I thought if it was a gastro bug that he had, it was probably good that he had a good rest while the kids were at school/day care. When Ralf got home after work with the kids, he said Eddie seemed to brighten up, was much more lively than he was that morning. However, that was not to last...
