Eddie's Story

The purchase of a pet should be an exciting and joyful time. The day we brought Eddie (Edward Scissorhands) home, we had no idea on the journey he would be leading us on. His story is not a unique one, but one that has involved so many helpful and caring people, that have encouraged me to document his story. Perhaps in doing so, we might educate people into how important the care and welfare of animals is... here is Eddie's story.

August 10, 2008

On a clear, sunny Sunday I was relaxing with a cup of tea and reading the Sunday Times. Turning to the Readers Mart I scanned the advertisements for puppies for sale. Coming across an advert for a Golden Retriever puppy, my eyes stopped. A breed that has always been appealing to me. I decided to ring the advertiser... a very chatty lady who could talk the ear off a door-post! She said that all the puppies bar 2 had been sold, but another lady was coming to look at one very shortly. Only a male puppy was left. That's okay, we wanted a male dog anyway. As she was from past Fremantle, she offered to meet us half way - save us the travelling. At the time I thought that this was a generous offer. We packed up the boys in the car to go and see this little pup. Of course he was cute... all puppies are cute. He frantically came into my arms constantly trying to lick and nuzzle me. He seemed a little thin, and had a couple of large sores on the back of his... I assumed these were from fleas and him scratching himselves. The 'lady' (and I use that term loosely) said that he probably had one or two fleas. We bought him and brought him home. The whole drive home he was nestled on my shoulder and around my neck.

After we got him home, he seemed a little quiet. I decided to give him some food - chicken and rice. I forgot that you are supposed to cook all meats for puppies. Considering the last puppy I had was nearly 15 years ago, not surprising that I was a little rusty on puppy care! Eddie wolfed the food down in record time. For the rest of the afternoon and that evening he seemed subdued - I took it as being a bit nervous of his new home. We had bought some flea treatment on the way home, and while watching tv that night and he slept on our laps, Ralf and I picked off at least 36 big fleas, if not more.
